COSMETIC AND MEDICAL USES OF BOTOX INJECTIONS

The lines on your face don’t always show your true age. Often, sun damage, pollution, genetics, and other factors can cause individuals to develop deep lines and wrinkles even at a younger age. If you wish that your face could reflect the youth and vitality that you feel on the inside, you can consider neuromodulator treatments such as Botox.

Botox is an injectable that is used cosmetically to smooth away lines and wrinkles and make the skin look younger. Botox is a treatment with a long track record that has helped many of our patients reach their aesthetic goals.

If you are interested in receiving Botox treatments, we would love to get you started at Enriched Aesthetics. We have been injecting Botox for many years and we offer professional services in a relaxed and luxurious environment.

What Are Neuromodulators?

To understand what Botox is and how it works, you will need a basic understanding of neuromodulators. A neuromodulator, such as Botox, helps regulate signals in the body. In the case of Botox, the active ingredient (botulinum toxin A) blocks certain signals from reaching the muscles in the injection area. This causes mild and temporary paralysis in a portion of the muscle, preventing it from contracting.

How does this process prevent wrinkles? When certain muscles in your face contract, they cause your skin to fold. When your skin begins to lose its elasticity, this will eventually cause a permanent line in the skin. However, if we can relax the muscle that is responsible for these wrinkles, we can minimize the appearance of these lines. With targeted injections, we can smooth away wrinkles. Medically, Botox can also be used to calm muscle spasms, treat overactive sweat glands, and block pain signals.

What to Expect From Your Botox Treatment

Before Treatment

Botox is a no-downtime treatment that can be completed in less than an hour for most patients. Preparing for your Botox treatment is simple. To help reduce any bruising that you might have from the injections, most doctors recommend staying away from alcohol or anti-inflammatory drugs in the few days preceding your appointment. While taking care of your skin is important, it is especially important before Botox. Use gentle cleansers and moisturizers that won’t irritate your skin and make sure to protect it from sunburn.

During Treatment

We begin many treatments by cleansing your skin and applying a numbing cream. After the anesthetic has taken effect, we will wipe it off and prepare the injection. We may ask you to make facial expressions such as frowning, smiling, or raising your eyebrows so that we can target the exact muscles that are causing your lines and wrinkles.

Injections are not painful and we will ask for your constant feedback to ensure that you are comfortable with the process. The number of units that you will receive will depend on whether we are treating the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, or other areas. During your consultation, we will let you know how many units we recommend.

After Treatment

After your treatment, you may have a small red bump at each injection site along with some general redness and swelling. This should go away within a few hours. You won’t start to notice any results from your treatment until an average of 5 to 7 days post-injection. After 30 days, you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of your botox treatment.

Taking care of your skin is just as vital after treatments. You should avoid anything that could irritate your skin or injection sites such as harsh sunlight and facial massage. We also recommend staying in an upright position for at least 4 hours after your treatment.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Because Botox is a temporary treatment, after 3-4 months you will notice some of your lines and wrinkles returning. An effective strategy for keeping wrinkles away is to combine your skin care products and treatments with regular Botox treatments. A good maintenance plan that we suggest for many of our patients is injections four times per year. You can even get better results from subsequent treatments as your muscles are retrained and the upward motion muscles in the face become stronger.

Are You a Good Candidate for Botox?

Often our patients think that Botox is only a treatment for patients who are over 40. But Botox can be a good solution for adults of any age. We offer Botox treatments based on the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles rather than age. You may be a good candidate for Botox injections if you are unhappy with facial lines and wrinkles, you are in good health, and you are not pregnant or nursing.

What Can Botox Be Used For?

  • Forehead Wrinkles: Botox is FDA-approved for relaxing muscles on the forehead and reducing horizontal lines.
  • Frown Lines: If you have vertical lines, sometimes called 11s, between your eyebrows from frowning or squinting, Botox can be used to smooth these lines.
  • Crow’s Feet: Deep crow’s feet can be effectively treated using Botox injections.
  • Hyperhidrosis: Also known as excessive sweating, hyperhidrosis can be treated with neuromodulators. Botox can block signals that cause sweat glands to produce too much sweat.
  • Migraines: Pain signals can be effectively blocked using Botox injections. The medication can be injected into trigger points in the face, neck, or other areas.
  • TMD: Temporomandibular joint disorders can cause headaches, dizziness, and more. Botox can be an effective treatment for patients who suffer from TMJ pain.
