What is Acne Scarring?
Most individuals will experience acne breakouts at some point in their life. While typically acne is associated with the angsty teenage years, it can come and go at any moment and isn’t restricted to a specific age group. These breakouts can leave you with a variety of scarring as your body begins the healing process.
During a breakout, inflammation under your skin occurs which can cause trauma to skin tissue. While this isn’t always the case, and some circumstances are more severe than others, this trauma can lead to acne scarring once the breakout clears.
Depressed acne scarring occurs when the body produces too little collagen to heal the damaged tissue properly, leaving depressions or pits on your skin as it heals. Raised acne scars occur when your body overcompensates and produces too much collagen throughout the healing process, leaving you with a raised scar as opposed to a depressed one.
Reduce Acne Scars With CO2 Laser Treatment
Combining the latest technology and medicine, we’re able to provide a solution for your acne scars. Using CO2 (carbon dioxide) treatments, acne scars can be significantly reduced or eliminated for good.
The CO2 process uses a fractional laser to help smooth out scarring by stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. Helping you get a smoother, younger, and more refined look that may have seemed out of reach before.
The benefits of choosing CO2 laser treatments for your acne scarring may include a combination of any of the following.
- It helps minimize sun damage, acne scars, and fine lines
- Can improve skin tone and texture
- Precise treatment areas
- Stimulates your body’s collagen production
- Minimal downtime post-treatment
- Sessions are typically fast
CO2 Laser Resurfacing
With CO2 laser treatments, we use a laser that is divided up into thousands of narrow shafts of light that penetrate through the surface of your skin. This helps to jump-start your body’s healing process which includes an increase in collagen production. The collagen can help restore, tighten, and smooth out precise areas of concern and reduce or eliminate acne scars.
Also known as fractional laser treatment, this process is typically a fast and effective way to treat moderate to severe acne scarring. The minimal recovery time and availability make CO2 laser treatments one of the best options for anyone looking to take care of their acne scars once and for all.
Your CO2 Laser Treatment Process
Before beginning treatment, it’s important to have a firm understanding of how the process works. We help guide you from your initial consultation through the recovery and follow-up treatments so that you’re comfortable and informed throughout your entire treatment.
Consultation
At your initial consultation, we’ll go over the pros and cons of treatment, assess your areas of concern, and review any prior treatments and medications that you may be taking. This is an important step where you’ll have a chance to voice any concerns you may have about the treatment as well as discuss the process with a certified provider.
Once it has been decided that CO2 laser treatment is the right choice for your acne scar needs, we’ll schedule your in-office visit for your first treatment.
Treatment
During your treatment, you may be given local anesthesia or sedative medications along with a topical numbing agent applied to the treatment areas. This is to increase your comfort throughout the CO2 laser treatment which usually takes around 45 minutes for a partial face and around 2 hours for full face treatments.
Once your treatment is complete, we’ll cover the treated areas with a non-stick dressing to help protect your treated areas. You need to follow all aftercare instructions given to you by your provider to see the best results and avoid unnecessary complications throughout the healing process.
Recovery
While you’re able to quickly get back to a routine post-treatment, there are some important things that you must keep in mind during your recovery. Knowing how to care for and protect your skin throughout the entire 2-week recovery period will allow you to get the results that you want and reduce any discomfort or complications.
Below are some of the things that you can and can not do to allow your treated area to properly heal.
- Avoid excess sun exposure for at least 1 week
- Do not use harsh skin products
- Cool compress as needed
- Do not rub, pick, or scrub the treated areas
- Avoid heavy exercising for 3 days
- Do not use makeup or sunblock
